CAM Cihuatlan 2013

Missed the announcement that the fundraiser was yesterday on the Plaza in Cihuatlan.   However you will find more info and how to support them on their Web Site below.   Great bunch of teachers and some pretty special kids.  Two of my friends have kids there.  School is located in Barra de Navidad.

What is the mission of special education?

To give access and assistance to children and adults that present special educative needs. Giving priority to those with physical disabilities and giving them a sense of equality, quality of life and the ability to develop their capacities to their maximum and allow their integration socially, educationally and in the workplace.

Hotel Bogavante

The hotel website is rather humorous in their bending of the truth. Of course they are talking to people who don't know the history. They say the hotel opened in 1989 and with a recent remodel they are a totally new hotel. The actual fact is it has been an eyesore since I first saw it in 2000. New construction started I don't know when - but nothing done for 8-10 years. Just cement and re-bar with two floors at the most. So they have finally gotten around to finishing the ground floor and one floor of rooms above.  Still lots of cement and re-bar a few floors above that.

Actually what I wanted to post about was the attractiveness of the first floor, the pool overlooking the beach, the restaurant and some occasional music.  A number of people have really enjoyed their varied and upscale menu and of course the food.  They have also had jazz groups in made up of local musicians, which I hear are pretty good.   I don't get out much at night so know nothing about music schedules or restaurant hours. Really sounds like either or both are worth checking out if you are in the area.

Longshore Drift

Is Longshore Drift the reason Barra has so little sand and why Melaque has so much?   Melaque's beach is currently wider than I've ever seen it.

Barra de Navidad a "Pueblo Mágico"?

The mayor of Cihuatlan is asking to have it considered in this YouTube press conference.   Everyone I know seriously doubts it will happen.   Maybe just looking for another source of finance for the troubled town.

To be considered a town needs most of these to qualify

Arquitectura: Consider the harmony and general conservation of architectural, civil or public, that give character and identity to the town. Not necessarily must be populated with historical monuments, but also villages or vernacular architecture of the twentieth century.

Edificios emblemáticos: Highlight buildings, for its style, history and majesty are, by themselves, an attractive element for visitors.

Fiestas y Tradiciones: As part of the intangible cultural heritage, it is worth noting the importance of local festivals as cultural elements that sustain life in the community.

Producción Artesanal: A sign of creation and imagination of the people in its population presents craft as part of the magic that surrounds them.

Cocina Traditional: element of fundamental importance to highlight the nature of identity and its link to cultural tourism traditional cuisine can be enjoyed in its original context.

Free Breakfast?

Looks like Nacho's Restaurant is having free breakfasts this month (all month?) or maybe only on Independence Day the 16th. I somehow think the menu will be limited ... but that's alright.   Check it out.

Health Clinic in Barra closes

Poor health services in Barra de Navidad, a tourist destination and they can not guarantee the right of people to basic health services. This weekend the clinic closed by saying that the doctor became ill and no one can replace him.

Barra is a tourist destination on the Costalegre and is promoted for the full holiday season so it's not recommended to get sick or have an emergency because no one can replace the doctor.

SEMARNAT to allow dredging of the lagoon because of "urgency"

JALISCO - The Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT),  issued a "waiver" of environmental impact statement (MIA) to dredge the Barra de Navidad lagoon, because of the urgency of removing the silt before of the arrival of a new hurricane and the threat to the local population.

Other proposed projects such as removing the jetty, bringing in sand or building breakwaters will require a environmental impact statement.   The jetty was built in 1986 before Environmental Laws were enacted.

Or maybe a couple breakwaters

This project is in two segments that are embedded 3.5 meters deep into the seabed, and rise to the level of low water so when low-tide arrives they will be seen. The first section would be one hundred meters long and 50 meters from the pier. The second, 300 meters from the jetty and a length of 60 meters. The separation between the two is 60 meters. They would both be 70 meters from the beach. The breakwaters would be of geobags which are made of geotextile filled with sand.

Tear down the Malecon

President of Chihuatlan proposes to destroy the pier jetty in Barra de Navidad

Given the evident lack of funds authorized by federal and state government to help, the mayor of Cihuatlán proposes the destruction of the "breakwater" located on the boardwalk in Barra de Navidad, in order to lessen the impact in the area of on the beach and lagoon.

Mayor Jesús Huerta Aguilar said that the Presidency of the Republic and the Government of Jalisco and are aware of the problems facing the tourist resort of Barra de Navidad, where rough seas have impacted many buildings, the beach and closing businesses,  which has contributed to a decline in the number of visitors and thus has lowered the economic flow.

The mayor's short-term solution "is to destroy the breakwater", the jetty built between the beach and lagoon.

Locals and tourist services of Barra de Navidad agree with the mayor in the sense that since the construction of the breakwater, the swells were taking away beach sand and filling the lagoon.

Waves continue to cause damage in Barra de Navidad

On the boardwalk "Marcelino García Barragán" strong waves caused damage to another restaurant located on Avenida Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The tides continue to cause damage to buildings constructed in the maritime zone without the date is fixed this problem which worsened for at least two years and has caused excessive loss of space on the beach for a decade.
In late June, the restaurant "Popeye" suffered damage from heavy seas. The storm and hurricane rainfall continues, with the latent threat to other buildings.
Federal Deputy Michel Gabriel Gomez before cihuatlense residents of this community, committed to managing resources for oceanographic study, looking for a solution to this problem. The legislature recognized and warned that the final solution will take years to arrive.
For his part, Mayor Jesús Huerta Aguilar promotes the dredging of the lagoon in Barra de Navidad, as an alternative solution.
Last week, in France, was held an international conference on the "dynamics of the coast", in which experts from 27 countries presented two decades ago the dominant idea was to protect the coast, the beaches, with dikes, jetties and cement
In the future should be built along with nature, that is, "the natural way possible." For experts, the future is to strengthen the beaches with sand sediments.
